From My Old Friend, Antonio…Wisdom Borne of Experience

Standard

The following is a quote from my old and dear friend, Antonio. He lives in Hong Kong. He and I have worked together for 40 years or so. Antonio is wise and kind and has seen it all, from his very early childhood days of Chiang Kai-shek’s failing leadership to the rise of Mao and the post-revolution years, the recidivism of the Red Guard years and the rise of a new PRC under Deng Xiaoping. He’s lived through the threat of a Communist overrunning of HK, lived during the years of the British occupation, seen the effects of Tiananmen Square on HK, and now the student movement for more democratic representation in HK. I’d written him, asking his views on the current student/police standoff. And then asked him about his opinion of the ISIS juggernaut in Syria and Iraq. Here, written in his somewhat broken english, is Antonio’s statement. It is, I think, the Human Condition in a nutshell.

“Hong Kong people has been get used of the old days that no body is interesting to talk politics, every body is keep working working.  They don’t really care about politics as the government will handle it nicely, and people only concern to make more money.
But things is changing now.  More and more different impacts from different places is impacting each other.  There is no boundaries for people to spread their thoughts no matter it’s right or wrong. Further more, in politics there is no right or wrong, bad or good. Benefit is the only principle never change, people sitting together because of their same benefits today, then becomes enemies tomorrow because of benefit is never enough to share equally for every people.
When god cannot stand that much chaos amongst all these people, he will just let them killing each other until the noises is calming down to where he can stand, and then everything will start over again………………..”

Nuff said?
Certainly a Darwinian approach to socio/political realities, but it rings true. Alas, it does.
